At first glance, it sounds like a simple consent request.

It isn't.

It may become one of the defining questions for Indian real estate, artificial intelligence and digital property rights over the coming decade.

Because the moment that camera begins recording, the home starts serving another purpose.

It is no longer just a place to live.

It becomes part of the infrastructure that helps train the next generation of artificial intelligence.

That single question represents something much larger than a new feature offered by a home-services company.

It signals the beginning of an entirely new relationship between our homes, our data and the AI economy.

A recent Forbes report highlighted how home-services startup Pronto is piloting wearable cameras during cleaning sessions. Customers can choose recorded visits for additional transparency, workers may receive higher compensation and, with appropriate permissions, the resulting first-person recordings can contribute valuable visual data for training AI systems and future humanoid robots.

The original reporting quite rightly explored questions around privacy, labour and robotics.

But there is another story hiding underneath it.

It is also a real estate story.

As someone who has spent years building a real estate intelligence platform and analysing how homes create value, I believe this represents the beginning of an entirely new asset class within residential property.

Not land.

Not buildings.

Not location.

Data.

That means recognising that data generated inside homes has long-term economic value.

It means treating homeowners, residents, workers, platforms, housing societies and developers as stakeholders.

It means designing governance frameworks before widespread adoption.

History repeatedly shows that thoughtful governance creates stronger innovation than regulation written in response to crisis.

The Next Property Debate Won't Be About Square Feet

It Will Be About Data Rights.

Three ideas deserve serious discussion.

First, workers whose expertise helps train commercial AI systems should have transparent and fair participation in the long-term value created from their knowledge.

Second, homeowners should receive clear records showing when recordings were made, how data is stored, who has accessed it and whether consent can later be modified or withdrawn.

Third, developers, housing societies, technology companies and policymakers should begin creating common standards for residential data governance before AI-enabled home services become mainstream.

These conversations are far easier before an industry matures than after it does. For stakeholders preparing for this shift, these five points to get AI-ready are a practical starting place.

The Next Era of Real Estate Has Already Begun
